About us

African Alabaster is a natural skincare company based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We make use of African butter and oil extracts to create luxurious soaps and skincare products. All our products are handmade and created in small batches to ensure the best possible quality. At African Alabaster, all soaps and skincare products are completely organic, preservative-free and cruelty-free. For the essential oils used to scent our products. 

African Alabaster is a proudly female-owned business and was established in 2017. From a very young age, the founder and owner of African Alabaster, Thabi Hlela, has always been passionate about skincare. Having struggled with numerous skin issues such as acne, dryness and sensitivity herself, she knew that she wanted to formulate something that was nourishing and less harsh on her skin. This is where the idea of African Alabaster was born. Thabi decided to start creating natural skincare products and organic soaps in her kitchen, using only household items and utensils.

Even though she was already making her own skincare products at home, she
realised that she needed to learn more. Thabi then decided to go to United Kingdom (UK) and enrol herself at a school  which specialised in natural and organic skincare. Here, she was able to learn more about the manufacturing of all kinds of different skincare products. After returning to South Africa, she officially started the company, African Alabaster.

African Alabaster also believes in empowering disadvantaged communities in South Africa. Before starting her business, Thabi obtained an Honours degree in Social Work at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a National Diploma in Community Extension at Mangosuthu University of Technology. It was always incredibly important for Thabi to be able give back and uplift the community. Because of this, she decided to train and share her soap making skills and knowledge with unemployed people living in the rural areas in KwaZulu-Natal. This allowed them to become more self-sufficient, put food on the table and assist their families financially.

Today, African Alabaster is a successful small business that produces natural, high-quality soaps and skincare products that deliver real results.
